SIGNIFICANCE OF COMMUNICATION in the workplace

Communication is the nerve centre of business today. As you go to the to the corporate ladder, you will find that communication skills are required, more than the technical skills. Communication research has revealed that among the factors most important for managerial success, communication skills rank above technical skills. A Survey has revealed American Businesses spend more than $3 billion per year to provide training for people on writing skills-a type of communication. Most of the successful professionals have indicated that communication skills are more vital to job success than subjects taken in college.

Communication is required all the more in this age of technology and information. The virtual platforms in which we conduct ourselves has changed as the technology has evolved. The advent of social media, the arrival of the cloud and the smartphones has changed the way we communicate professionally and the way we expect others to interact. This has allowed us to communicate with one another much faster and anytime and anywhere.

Employee engagement is at one of the top agendas of all business leaders. Workplace communications have to be more targeted and personalized as engaged employee stays for longer period and also being more productive. Connecting people to people is becoming more significant these days as they are not sitting next to each other. Strong relationships are the fundamental part of the business success. The new model of business is based on teamwork, rather than on individual action and thus requiring better coordination and communication.

Effective communication serves the following specific purposes for the Management of any Organization:

  • Towards achieving a common organizational goal:To ensure the smooth flow of information regarding the goals of the organization, there is a need of open communication between supervisors, co-workers and subordinates leading to greater awareness of organizational goals and team work. Coordination between the different departments in particular leads to greater motivation to work together rather than working in isolation. Today’s Work Force is becoming more Globalized day by day which can be challenging for Management who must work with diverse employees from different places and backgrounds. Communication skills needs to be effective for this Multicultural and Multi National work force to communicate and achieve the Organizational goals and objectives
  • Better work relationships:A Manager can create a climate of openness by listening to employees, showing empathy and giving them the freedom to express their opinions without fear leading to better employer -employee relationships. This will make employees more comfortable in approaching their Superiors and discuss any matter with them. Managers who communicate effectively are Better Motivators and create collaborative environment that any organization needs to survive.
  • Problem Solving Skills:Effective communication can help resolve conflicts between co-workers, work related and performance related problems. Face to face communication is suited for achieving this task, since this is one and highly personalized in nature. Effective communication helps to enhance problem solving skills of Management-Communicate and collaborate to address changes resolve differences and explore potential solutions.
  • Enhanced performance:The Mangers at the time of appraising the performance of their team can point out the areas of improvement. The Manager can always motivate the employees to perform better by a constructive review of performance, giving positive feedback, instead of criticizing for poor performance. Effective Communication helps people understand what they are supposed to do and why to do it and how to do it which goes a long way in increasing productivity.
  • Better understanding of External Environment:Effective communication is also important with the External people of the organization. They are the Customers, Government, Bankers, Media and Suppliers with whom building rapport for the Manager is essential for smooth function of the organization. Understanding the needs of the customers, being aware of the presence of Quality Suppliers of material, Regulations of the Government and the expectations of the community at large is possible only through the proper communication.
