GD-GROUP DISCUSSIONS-types n topics!

PART-2

TYPES & TOPICS -GD

Types of GD:

  1. Topic Based GD
  2. Case Based GD

TOPIC BASED GD

  • The Moderator gives a topic to the candidates or may be allowed to select their own topic for discussion.
  • By the end the Group should attempt to arrive at a conclusion on the issue that is covered by the topic.
  • Generally two types of topics:
    • Knowledge based topics
    • Abstract topics

Knowledge based topics:

These topics require extensive knowledge to be able to contribute to the GD. For example, the topic “The USA is more interested in the petroleum of the middle East rather than in the real peace there”. Unless you know about the troops sent by the US during the gulf war the outcome of the war and the views about other neighboring countries, including India you will not be able to speak effectively on the topic. Knowledge base topics cover current economic issues and non economic issues. Although past issues are also given as GD topics, the focus is usually on the topics of the current relevance.

Some of the important categories of knowledge base topics are the following:

  • Economic related topics:
    • These maybe related to domestic or international issues and the account for the majority of the topics given for GDs. They require good content knowledge and familiarity with facts and figures about the National and International economy. for example “How did demonetization affect India?” “Is the Indian economy flourishing or on the verge of crumbling?” “What is your opinion on the privatization of most of the public sectors in India?” “Do you think India’s economy is in safe hands?”
  • Social topics:
    • Examples of such topics are “Is India losing its own culture and tradition with the rapid westernization?” “Should work from home be continued?” “Do you think being a housewife is a full-time job?”. While social topics generally have a greater National content base some amount of content maybe region specific therefore when you are discussing such topics should be clear about both the general nature of the topic as well as the specific manifestations on the social issue
  • Political Topics:
    • Such topic should be discussed in an objective manner you should not restrict your discussion to the problem that is mentioned in the topic but should also include connected topics for example “What if the communist came to power?”or “Plans to attract foreign investments” are interdependent aspects that will have to be study it and noted down so that they are useful in a GD. More examples-“Is changing the name of cities in India a political agenda?” “Does providing free transportation facilities to women in Delhi metros and buses ensure women empowerment?”
  • Sports or Film related topics:
    • These are very common in number of GD since they are an integral part of Indian society. A general awareness about sports and films is needed to be able to participate effectively. Sports topics are usually selected from recently concluded tournament such as World cups and Olympics they may be gone in general nature such as “Why isn’t hockey as popular as cricket?” OR specific to a particular game or a sports person such as “Sachin Tendulkar cricket days are over?” and the same is true or Film based topics.
  • IT based topics:
    • IT is a prominent sector. Topics based on this often feature among the list of topics for discussion. While IT indicates technology, a discussion on IT based topics does not mean that you need to have a thorough knowledge of programming or a computer hardware. However general awareness of a topic such as e-governance or networking would be needed.

Abstract based topic:

These are the topics which require common sense more than content knowledge. Topic such as “Haste makes the waste” “Every cloud has a silver lining” “Life is full of cactus, but you don’t have to sit on it”. One can have widespread discussions and best discussed using examples.

CASE BASED GD

This type of GD is more structured and the direction of the discussion is almost predetermined by the identified problem and essentially move towards a solution. They require less regulation of the discussion by the moderator, since there is a less scope for deviating from the topic compared to the topic based GD.

While discussing the case based GD, you will be required to assume the role of the person in the case who needs to take decision. In a topic based GD you present your own views opinions without assuming the role of anybody else.

A case usually has a problem which requires a solution or a decision to be taken. Your approach in taking the decision and your interaction with other members of the group in the process of taking the decision will be evaluated by the moderator. Sometimes the moderator might ask you to write a summary of the case discussion at the end.

It is advisable to practice among your family members or within group of friends by selecting as many topics on the above criteria s. This gradually will overcome the anxiety, fear, nervousness and will make you confident during GD and you have definitely better chances of getting shortlisted as a successful candidate.
