DEFINITION AND DETERMINANTS
Personality can be defined as a dynamic and organized set of characteristics possessed by a person which uniquely influences his/her knowledge, motivations and behavior in various situations.
Personality can also be understood by the following diagram:-
Human are complex beings and their personalities are shaped by a combination of genetic factors and environmental influences.
While some traits may be inherited ,others develop as a result of our experiences and interactions with the environment.
Factors that determine the personality development :-
INTERPLAY between HEREDITY and ENVIRONMENT
1.Role of HEREDITY :
The relationship of heredity with personality is a well accepted fact. Heredity is regarded as the significant factor in influencing development of personality.

The heredity approach argues that the ultimate explanation of individual’s personality is the structure of the genes and the genetic influence is fairly accepted. Heredity focuses on the fact that each parent transfers half of his or her genes to the offspring.Parents can also give a different set of genes to different offspring. For eg. identical twins have same DNA but siblings do not . Siblings are the children of same parents- Related by blood but different in nature, attitude and physical appearances. Heredity is the means by which the offspring acquire the personalities, behaviors and characteristics from the parents as well as grand parents.
It is essential to note that genetic factors or heredity factors do not solely determine our personalities . There are other factors that contribute significantly as given below.
2. Role of ENVIRONMENT:
Environment comprises of culture. family, social and situational factors. The environmental factors influence the personality of an individual since they provide the basis for certain experiences that determine an individual’s view about life, both positive and negative.

After Infancy socialization with other members of the immediate family: – Father – Brother – Sister – close relatives – Friends Then with other social groups: – peers – school friends – members of work group All above play influential roles | 2. Any kind of trauma suffered during childhood can sometime change the structure of his/her own personality. Thus some events and some experiences have strong impact on personality. |
